Doors or tailgate can pop open while driving

Confirmed pattern

On 2013 to 2016 Range Rovers the keyless latch on the doors, and separately the tailgate, could release on its own, letting a door or the tailgate swing open on the move rather than staying shut. Owners reported it happening at speed, not just when parked up. It was serious enough for a factory recall covering the affected build years, so check the vehicle's recall history before buying and confirm the work was actually carried out.

Electronic parking brake sticks on or won't release

Partly in the MOT data

The electric parking brake's actuator can wear or its calibration can drift, throwing a "Park Brake Fault" message and leaving the brake stuck applied, sometimes after nothing more than a routine pad change that wasn't followed by a recalibration. Brakes are the fault this model actually fails MOTs on most, and this is the version of that story a buyer won't see on a test drive unless they specifically try the parking brake: a car can drive and stop fine and still have a parking brake that won't disengage.

Air suspension sags or won't hold height

Emerging

Air springs perish and leak, the compressor loses the ability to build pressure, or the valve block sticks, and the car sits low on one corner overnight or drops at all four when parked for a while. It shows up from around ten years old on the earlier L322 cars and has been reported on L405s too, sometimes needing a software update alongside the parts. A single spring is a few hundred pounds; a full four-corner respray of springs and compressor work can run past £2,000.

Infotainment and instrument cluster gremlins

Emerging

Screens that freeze or go blank, an infotainment system that switches itself off and back on losing radio and navigation, and instrument clusters that drop out intermittently are recurring complaints across owner forums, mostly needing a battery disconnect or dealer reset rather than new parts. It's an annoyance rather than a safety issue in most reports, but a car that does it repeatedly points to a wiring or module fault that keeps coming back.

3.0 TDV6 diesel: crankshaft and bearing failure

3.0 TDV6 diesel only

The Ford-sourced 3.0 TDV6 diesel has a history of big-end bearing and crankshaft failures, starting as a deep knocking rattle from low in the engine, worst from cold. Honest John recorded a case failing at 17,500 miles with Land Rover declining to contribute toward the repair, and specialist engine rebuilders and forum threads describe the same failure pattern on higher-mileage cars. A full engine replacement or rebuild is the usual fix, and that's a big bill on a car this size, so a cold start and a listen for knock matters more than usual here.

5.0 supercharged petrol: timing chain rattle

5.0 Supercharged petrol only

The AJ133 5.0-litre supercharged V8 can develop timing chain guide and tensioner wear, heard as a rattle on cold start that owners often ignore because it clears once the engine warms and oil pressure builds. Left alone it gets worse and can turn into a much bigger repair; specialist guides put early intervention at low four figures and a full tensioner and guide job, or worse, well beyond that. It's mostly reported from around 50,000 miles on.

Push firmly on each door and the tailgate with the car parked and unlocked. Any looseness or a latch that doesn't feel positive is worth checking against the door/tailgate recall history.
Pull the electronic parking brake on and off a few times, including on a slope. A "Park Brake Fault" message or a brake that won't release points to the actuator/calibration fault, and ties into why this model's MOT brake fails run high.
Park it, walk away for 20 minutes, then come back and check ride height at all four corners. One corner sitting low, or the whole car dropped, means a leaking air spring, compressor or valve block.
Cycle through every infotainment screen and watch the instrument cluster for a full test drive. A screen that blanks, freezes or restarts itself is the recurring electrical gremlin, not a one-off.
On a TDV6 diesel, start it stone cold and listen low in the engine before you touch the throttle. A deep, rhythmic knock is the sign of the known crankshaft/bearing failure, not normal diesel clatter.
On a 5.0 supercharged petrol, listen hard for the first few seconds after a cold start. A rattle that fades as the engine warms is timing chain wear starting, worth a proper inspection before it's ignored further.
Get the full service history and check for stamps confirming any recall work was carried out. An unactioned recall, especially the door/tailgate latch one, is a straightforward and free fix you shouldn't have to pay for.
