Air suspension wear and compressor failure

The X7 rides on twin-axle self-levelling air suspension as standard, and owners on the BMW forums report sagging corners, uneven ride height and noisy or failing compressors, sometimes needing a full self-levelling pump or air strut replacement. The measured MOT data backs this up in a general sense: suspension is the standout fault category for this model. Whether it is the air struts themselves or the linkages and bushes around them wearing first varies by report, but the system is complex and expensive compared with steel springs.

N63 V8 oil consumption and timing chain guide wear

V8 petrol only

The xDrive50i/M50i's twin-turbo 4.4-litre N63 V8 is a long-standing BMW family with a reputation for burning oil between services and, on the higher-mileage older versions of this engine, for timing chain guides wearing and rattling. The G07 uses an updated N63 but the same weak points are reported by specialist workshops. Watch for a heavy oil top-up requirement and a rattle on cold start; a chain and guide job runs well into four figures if it is needed.

Steering rack pinion recall

BMW recalled a range of 2019-2021 models including the X7 over a steering rack where the pinion teeth could break under load, risking a loss of steering control. This was a free dealer fix under recall, not a buyer cost, but it is worth checking any pre-owned car actually had the work done.

Integrated brake module faults

BMW's integrated brake (IB) control module, used across recent X7 model years, has been the subject of several separate recalls for welds or software faults that can cause a loss of power brake assist or knock out ABS/DSC. It is a manufacturer-acknowledged design and build issue that has recurred across multiple model years rather than a one-off fix, so check the car's recall history rather than assuming an older recall covers a newer build.

Third-row seat backrest recall

On 2019-2022 X7s with the third row fitted, the compression springs that lock the seatback upright could be missing or badly installed, letting the backrest fold forward in a crash. BMW recalled affected cars for a free inspection and repair. It costs nothing if outstanding, but it is worth confirming a used car has had the work done and that the third-row seats lock solidly.

Starter motor overheating

More recent X7s have been recalled after repeated start attempts were found to overheat the starter motor, with a small fire risk. It mainly affects cars that have had trouble starting first time and been cranked repeatedly, so it is more of a knock-on risk than a wear item, but it shows the starter and its wiring are worth checking on any car that has a history of slow or repeated starts.

Press down hard on each corner of the car and watch it settle back to ride height. A corner that sags, sits low overnight, or takes ages to rise points to the air suspension.
Listen for the suspension compressor running under the car with the engine off. A compressor cycling constantly or running noisily is working to cover a leak.
Pull the registration and check the DVSA/BMW recall record before viewing. Outstanding recalls (steering rack, brakes, third-row seat, starter) should have been done free; if not, get them booked before handover.
On a V8 xDrive50i or M50i, check the dipstick or oil display and ask for oil top-up history. Regular top-ups between services or a rattle on cold start point to the N63's known oil consumption and chain guide wear.
Do a firm brake stop from speed and watch the dash for ABS or DSC warning lights. Any warning lights or a pedal that feels spongy or inconsistent needs investigating against the brake module recalls.
If fitted with a third row, fold it up and give the backrest a firm shove forward. Any give or movement means the seatback lock springs need checking against the recall.
Ask about any history of slow or repeated starting. Cars that have needed several attempts to start are the ones the starter motor recall is aimed at.
