Electric power steering (EPS) faults

The Meriva's electric power steering, especially on the Mk1 (2003-2010), can drop out or turn heavy at low speed, sometimes with a steering warning light coming on. It's been a recurring owner complaint through the car's life and can appear at any age once the column module starts to wear, not just on old high-mileage cars. Vauxhall hasn't put a formal recall or TSB against it, but a replacement steering column typically runs to four figures, roughly £700-1,200, since the whole unit tends to get swapped rather than repaired piecemeal.

1.4 turbo engine rattle and coolant weeping

1.4 Turbo petrol only

The Meriva B's 1.4 turbo can develop a rattly, chain-driven clatter on cold start as the timing chain and its tensioner wear, most often reported from around 80,000 miles. Some cars also weep coolant around the turbo pipework, and ignition coil packs have been reported failing early enough to cause a rough idle or misfire warning well under six-figure mileages. None of it shows on an MOT until it's already expensive, a chain and tensioner job is labour-heavy and can run into four figures at a garage.

DPF and EGR clogging on short-trip diesels

Partly in the MOT data

Diesel Merivas used mainly for short runs can clog the DPF and EGR valve, bringing on limp mode, a smoky exhaust, or a stubborn engine light that a dealer regen won't clear on its own. The measured MOT data for this class backs it up in a roundabout way: Merivas fail on emissions and exhaust leaks more than the class average, and a blocked DPF or leaking EGR pipework is the everyday reason why. A proper clean or replacement DPF runs from a few hundred pounds up past a thousand depending on how far gone it is.

M32 gearbox bearing whine (six-speed manual)

6-speed manual diesel only

The six-speed M32 manual, shared with several other Vauxhalls of the era, can develop a whine or drone in the higher gears as an input shaft bearing wears. It's a known weak point across the GM range this gearbox was fitted to, not unique to the Meriva, and by the time it's audible the usual fix is a full gearbox rebuild or replacement rather than a quick bearing swap. Costs are steep, upwards of £1,000 at an independent specialist.

Parking brake sticking or self-applying

Emerging

Some owners report the electromechanical parking brake grabbing on its own while driving, or dragging and overheating the rear brakes after being released. Symptoms include a burning smell, reduced power, or the handbrake warning light staying lit. There's no official recall for it, but it comes up often enough in owner reports to treat a sticky or slow-releasing handbrake as a pattern rather than a one-off; a caliper or motor replacement is typically a few hundred pounds a side.

Water ingress through door and sunroof drains

Emerging

Blocked drain channels around the rear-hinged FlexDoors, and around the sunroof surround on cars fitted with one, let water pool in the sills and footwells instead of draining away. Left unnoticed it corrodes wiring connectors and control units underneath, showing up later as unrelated electrical faults, flickering warning lights, or a module that won't reset. Clearing the drains costs nothing, but it can run to hundreds of pounds if the damp has been left long enough to damage wiring.

With the engine running, turn the steering wheel lock to lock at a standstill. Any heaviness, a dropout in assistance, or a steering warning light points to the EPS fault.
Start a 1.4 turbo car from cold and listen for the first 20-30 seconds. A rattly clatter that fades as revs rise means the timing chain and tensioner are wearing.
Look underneath around the turbo and radiator hoses for damp or crusty residue. Weeping coolant around the turbo pipework is the same 1.4T weak spot showing itself.
Ask how the car is mainly used and check the MOT history for exhaust or emissions advisories. A diesel that's done mostly short runs, plus a smoky exhaust or limp mode, points to a clogged DPF or EGR valve.
On a manual diesel, hold a steady 50mph in top gear and listen underneath. A whine or drone that tracks road speed rather than engine revs suggests the M32 gearbox bearing is going.
Apply and release the parking brake a few times, then feel the rear wheels after a short drive. Grabbing, dragging, or a hot rear wheel means the parking brake is sticking.
Lift the boot carpet and check under the door seals and footwell mats for damp or a musty smell. Standing water means the drain channels are blocked and wiring underneath may already be corroding.
