Rear torsion beam misalignment and edge tyre wear

On early Mk2 cars (2005-2010) a manufacturing defect in the welded rear torsion beam can throw the rear wheel alignment out, so the outer edges of the rear tyres wear down fast and unevenly, sometimes within a year or two of the car being new. Some owners got replacement tyres under warranty, but the only proper fix is a new rear beam. It doesn't seem to have followed through to later generations. Repair is roughly £300-600 for the beam and labour, more if tyres need replacing too.

Dashboard rattle on early Mk2 cars

A persistent rattle from behind the dashboard, most often reported on 2005/2006-built cars, needs the dash stripped out to trace and fix. Some dealers were reluctant to do the job under warranty because it's fiddly and doesn't affect anything mechanical. It's a nuisance rather than a safety issue, and a specialist trim shop can usually sort it for a few hundred pounds in labour.

Premature clutch failure

A run of Mk3 (2010-2017) cars, including Swift Sport models, have gone through clutches unusually early, in one case after only 200 miles and another after three months of ownership. Dealers initially blamed driver error before Suzuki replaced the clutches under goodwill, which is exactly why owners and dealers still argue about it: is it a parts problem or heavy-handed drivers landing on a small sample of unlucky cars? Out of warranty, a clutch kit and fitting runs roughly £400-800.

DPF-related power loss on the 1.3 DDiS diesel

Diesel only

Owners of the Mk2 1.3 DDiS diesel have reported a brief but repeated loss of power at 2,500-3,000rpm, lasting a couple of seconds, most likely tied to the DPF's active regeneration cycle rather than a single faulty part. Suzuki dealers reportedly struggled to pin it down. It's worth knowing about before buying a diesel Swift used mainly for short trips, where the filter rarely gets hot enough to clean itself; a forced regeneration or, in bad cases, a new DPF, can run from under £100 to several hundred pounds. Doesn't apply to petrol Swifts.

ADAS glitches and windscreen/camera recalibration niggles

On 2017-on cars, owners have reported recurring 'system warning' messages knocking out lane-departure and collision-avoidance features, sometimes needing repeated dealer visits with only a temporary fix from resetting the car. A windscreen crack appearing with no obvious cause has also been reported, and replacing the glass means the ADAS camera has to be recalibrated, a job that doesn't always go cleanly and can leave lane-departure warning not working properly on ordinary roads. There's also a report of an ABS fault triggered simply by fitting a 15-inch spacesaver spare on a car built for 16-inch wheels, which needed the whole ABS module replaced. None of this is manufacturer-acknowledged as a fault. Recalibration or a module swap typically costs somewhere between £150 and £500 depending on what's needed.

On a Mk2 (2005-2010) car, check the rear tyres for uneven wear across the tread, especially heavier wear on the outer edge. Points to the rear torsion beam alignment fault; budget for a beam replacement, not just new tyres.
Drive a Mk2 over a rough road with the radio off and listen behind the dash. A persistent rattle usually means the dash has to come out to fix, and some dealers won't do it under warranty.
On a Mk3 (2010-2017), especially a Sport, pull away several times and feel for the clutch biting cleanly and consistently. Slipping, a high or vague bite point, or a burning smell suggests a clutch on its way out, an early failure pattern on this generation.
On the 1.3 DDiS diesel, take a longer run and watch for a brief power loss or hesitation around 2,500-3,000rpm. Likely tied to DPF regeneration; more common on cars used mostly for short trips.
On a Mk4 (2017 onwards), check the dash for any 'system warning' message and try the lane-departure and collision-avoidance features. A recurring warning that only clears with a reset points to the reported ADAS glitch, not necessarily fixed for good.
Check the windscreen for cracks or a replacement sticker, and if it's been replaced, test lane-departure warning on a normal road. A botched ADAS camera recalibration after glass replacement can leave the system not working properly.
If the car has ever run on a spacesaver spare, check for any ABS warning light history in the MOT record. Fitting the wrong wheel size has reportedly triggered an ABS fault needing a full module replacement.
