Unconfirmed issues

Reported

Owner folklore from forums and the motoring press. Most of it never shows up in an MOT, which is why this section exists at all.

Post-cat oxygen sensor packing in early

Emerging

The rear (post-catalyst) oxygen sensor on the 1.0-litre engine has a history of failing well before it should, triggering an intermittent engine-management light that comes on for a day or two then vanishes. Forum users report it from around 14,000 miles, and it's not unusual for the same car to need a second sensor a few years later. Peugeot hasn't acknowledged a pattern or issued a TSB; the part itself is cheap, it's the diagnostic chase beforehand that costs.

Every warning light floods the dash and the car limps to 30mph

Emerging

Rarer but nastier: every warning light comes on at once (engine, ABS, tyre pressure) and the car cuts power, restricting it to a crawl. It's turned up on 108s years apart, a 2014 car at 14,000 miles and a separate 2017 car, with dealers replacing ECUs and sensors without curing it either time. The best guess floating around is a poor earth lead from battery to body, but no confirmed fix or manufacturer acknowledgement exists.

ETG gearbox: jerky by design, clutch actuator wears out for real

Automatics only

The ETG gearbox on automatic 108s is a clutchless manual, not a torque converter, so slow, jerky changes are normal and not a fault in themselves. What isn't normal is the actuator-driven clutch wearing out early: owners of the mechanically identical Aygo and C1 have reported premature clutch failure from a few hundred miles up to the low 20,000s, with one C1 quoted around £1,400 to replace. Doesn't apply to manual-gearbox cars.

Front-end knocks and suspension wear

Partly in the MOT data

Owners on this shared city-car platform report clonks and creaks developing from the front suspension, struts, bushes and anti-roll bar links, as the cars pick up urban miles and speed-bump abuse. It's a steady wear pattern rather than one dramatic failure, and it lines up with the measured MOT data for this class: suspension is the standout fail category for small city cars like the 108, ahead of every other system checked.

Front brake discs rust and judder early

Disputed

Some owners report brake squeal and judder from corroded front discs at surprisingly low mileage, one case at just 6,000 miles, with Peugeot declining warranty cover on the grounds that disc corrosion isn't a manufacturing defect. It's a genuine split of opinion: short-journey, low-mileage driving lets discs surface-rust between uses, and whether that counts as a fault or ordinary wear is exactly what owners argue about.

Built from the two sections above.

Check the MOT and service history for repeated engine-management warning lights. Recurring codes point to the known post-cat oxygen sensor wearing out again.
Start the car and watch the dash for every light coming on together, then ask if it's happened before. Multiple lights plus a sudden loss of power is the unexplained electrical fault some 108s have shown, with no confirmed fix.
On an automatic (ETG) car, drive through several gear changes from a standstill. Some slow, jerky shifting is normal by design; harsh clutch slip, shudder or a burning smell means the actuator or clutch is failing.
Check the clutch biting point on manual cars pulling away. Owners on this shared platform have reported clutches wearing out well under 20,000 miles.
Drive over a speed bump or rough road and listen for knocks from the front end. Clonks from struts, bushes or drop links are the wear pattern behind this model's above-average MOT suspension fails.
Look closely at the front brake discs for rust ridges or pitting. Common on low-mileage cars that do mostly short trips; heavy corrosion means new discs are due soon, whatever the warranty says.
