Tailgate wiring loom cracking (rear lights, camera, number plate lamp)

The wiring loom that runs into the glass tailgate flexes every time the boot opens and closes, and over years the insulation splits where it bends. Owners see a false 'boot open' warning, a dead number plate light, a reversing camera that cuts out, or a rear light that fails intermittently rather than staying off. It tends to show up from around 5 to 8 years old and is a fiddly rather than expensive fix once found, typically £100-300 in labour to trace and re-tape or replace the loom section. This lines up with the measured MOT data for this segment, where lights and electrics is the standout fault category; the loom crack looks like a real mechanical cause behind at least some of that pattern.

EGR cooler leak on the diesel (18d/20d)

Diesel only

On the B47 diesel engine used in the X2 18d and 20d, the EGR cooler can develop an internal leak that lets coolant mix with soot in the exhaust gas recirculation system, which in rare cases has been linked to smouldering deposits near the intake manifold. BMW ran a safety recall covering B47-engined cars and extended the EGR cooler warranty to 15 years from first registration, so a car within that window should have been checked or replaced free of charge. Ask to see proof the recall work was done; if it wasn't, get it booked in before buying. Doesn't apply to petrol X2s.

Petrol engine coolant leaks (water pump and oil filter housing)

The B46/B48 petrol engines use a plastic-impeller water pump and a plastic oil filter housing, both of which are known to crack or perish and weep coolant, sometimes as early as 30-40k miles and commonly by 60-80k. The giveaway is a faint sweet smell, a coolant top-up that keeps dropping, or a puddle under the passenger side of the engine bay. Parts and labour together usually run £300-600 depending on which component has gone; leave it too long and it risks overheating the engine. No BMW recall on this, but it is repeatedly reported by independent BMW specialists and parts suppliers.

Upper engine mount wears out early

The upper passenger-side hydraulic engine mount is a repeatedly reported early failure point, with owners noticing extra vibration at idle and a clunk on take-up of drive or when accelerating hard, typically from 50-80k miles. It's a known item to check on a test drive rather than a big-ticket disaster; replacement is usually a few hundred pounds. Reported on both petrol and diesel X1/X2 sister models, so it looks like a shared-platform part rather than an engine-specific one.

Jerky, hesitant DCT auto at low speed

Automatics only

Cars with the 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch auto can feel rough and hesitant pulling away from a stop or crawling in traffic, especially when the box is still cold, then smooth out once warm. It's the normal character of this type of gearbox rather than a fault in most cases, but owners do report the odd car with a persistent shudder around 1-2mph that needs a clutch adaptation reset at a dealer. Doesn't apply to manual X2s, which are rare in the UK but do exist on early cars.

Turbo and carbon build-up on high-mileage petrols

Disputed

Some specialists flag rattly wastegates and carbon build-up on the intake valves (a known trait of direct-injection engines) as a reason idle can get lumpy and economy can drop by around 80k miles miles on the B48 petrol. Owners disagree on how much this actually matters in practice; plenty of high-mileage cars run fine on standard servicing, and a walnut-blast declarbon isn't something every car needs. Worth asking about if buying an older, higher-mileage petrol, but not a reason to walk away on its own.

Open and shut the boot a few times and check the number plate light, rear lights and reversing camera each time. Flickering or a false 'boot open' warning points to the tailgate wiring loom cracking.
Ask for proof of the EGR cooler recall/warranty work on any 18d or 20d diesel. No paperwork means it may not have been done, and the extended warranty window may be closing.
Check the coolant level and look under the passenger side of the engine bay for a residue or fresh silicone. Low coolant or a repaired-looking hose union suggests a water pump or oil filter housing leak.
Rev gently from idle and listen for a clunk as the drivetrain takes up load. A clunk on take-up can mean a worn engine mount, common from 50-80k miles.
On an automatic, pull away from a dead stop a few times, including once from cold if possible. Some hesitation is normal for this DCT, but a repeated harsh shudder around walking pace is worth querying.
On a higher-mileage petrol, check for a rough or lumpy idle once warm. Can indicate carbon build-up on the intake valves; not urgent but worth a price adjustment.
