Owner folklore from forums and the motoring press. Most of it never shows up in an MOT, which is why this section exists at all.
The Elise tub is bonded aluminium with mild steel bobbins bonded in at the suspension pickup points, mainly the front upper wishbones. Once the paint chips, salt water sets up a galvanic reaction between the steel and aluminium and eats the mount from the inside, sometimes leaving the aluminium as white powder before it is visible. Specialists treat this as the single most important check on any Elise; caught early it is a few hundred pounds of treatment, caught late it means chassis tube replacement, which can run past the value of the car.
Cars with the Rover K-series engine share that engine's well-known head gasket weakness, made worse in the Elise by the tiny coolant capacity, so even a small leak overheats the engine quickly rather than showing as a slow drip. Watch for a rising temp gauge, coolant loss with no visible puddle, or a rough idle after a run. Repair with a proper multi-layer steel gasket and skimmed head is roughly £400-£800; letting it run hot can wreck the head.
Cars with the later Toyota-sourced 2ZZ-GE engine have a marginal oil pickup that can starve the engine of oil under sustained hard cornering, a real risk on track days rather than road use. Separately, high oil consumption is a common complaint as these engines age, and the VVTL-i variable valve system's lift bolts are known to weaken with heavy track use, killing the high-cam power step above 6,000rpm if not replaced proactively. None of this shows up in an MOT.
The heater fan speed resistor sits low in the chassis with no drainage, so it regularly sits in water on cars used in the wet and corrodes at its spade connectors. Symptoms are losing one or more fan speeds, usually the motor feed connection going first and killing all speeds at once. It is a roughly £10 part but a dealer will quote around £600 because the front clamshell has to come off to get at it; specialists can do it cheaper by working through gaps in the bodywork.
How long an Elise clutch lasts is genuinely argued among owners: some get well over 30,000 miles on a gentle road car, others report the bite point creeping up and slip starting from as little as 11,000-20,000 miles where the car has seen track days or repeated hard launches. Aftermarket clutches (ACT, Fidanza flywheel) are a common upgrade for track cars because the standard clutch hub springs can fail under sustained abuse. A clutch and flywheel replacement is roughly £500-£900 depending on parts chosen.
